Fresh details have emerged in the ongoing investigation into the killing of Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, the late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), with investigators reportedly examining claims that the attack may have been aided by someone within his inner circle.
Ajiboye was shot by unidentified gunmen on Sunday, July 12, along Ikorodu Road in the Fadeyi area of Lagos, where his vehicle came under heavy gunfire. He later died from injuries sustained during the attack.
His death sent shockwaves through Lagos, particularly within transport union circles, where he was regarded as an influential figure.
On Tuesday, hundreds of mourners, including family members, colleagues, political associates and supporters, gathered in Fadeyi to pay their final respects to the 43-year-old union leader. Videos shared online showed emotional scenes as mourners struggled to hold back tears during his burial.
As investigations continue, security operatives are reportedly probing allegations that one of Ajiboye’s trusted associates may have provided information that enabled the attackers to carry out the ambush.
According to reports, a bricklayer identified as Oke, who allegedly worked for the deceased, is being investigated over claims that he monitored Ajiboye’s movements and passed information to those behind the attack. Authorities have also reportedly taken Oke and his wife into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators are equally searching for another suspect, identified simply as Suko, who has been accused of helping to finance the operation. Reports indicate that he allegedly fled Nigeria after the incident, although law enforcement agencies have yet to officially confirm his whereabouts.
A voice recording that has circulated online has also become part of the investigation. The audio reportedly captures an unidentified individual informing another person that Ajiboye was preparing to leave a location he had visited shortly before the attack. However, the authenticity of the recording has not been independently verified, and investigators have not publicly confirmed its evidential status.
Meanwhile, reactions to Ajiboye’s death have continued to emerge from associates and members of the public.
Content creator Ibrooanlyzer, who said he had known the late union leader since childhood, urged NURTW chieftain Koko Zaria to remain vigilant following the incident.
He claimed that Koko Zaria’s high public profile on social media may have contributed to his safety and advised him to exercise greater caution. The content creator also suggested that Koko Zaria consider spending time outside the country, citing recent security concerns and an earlier reported attack.
Police have not yet announced any official conclusions regarding the motive behind the killing, and investigations remain ongoing.
Authorities have urged members of the public to allow investigators to complete their work and avoid spreading unverified claims while efforts continue to identify everyone connected to the deadly attack.
