Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed his disappointment after being told the club is not currently in a position to offer him a new contract, despite fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch recently agreeing fresh deals.
The Argentina international, who joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023, said the decision had left him “very, very sad” but insisted that the situation would not affect his commitment to the club. Mac Allister still has two years remaining on his existing contract.
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” Mac Allister said, according to the BBC.
The 27-year-old stressed that his performances and daily work should demonstrate how seriously he continues to take his responsibilities at Liverpool. He said he remains fully committed to the club despite learning that there would be no immediate extension to his current agreement.
“Everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club every single day in training and games,” he said.
Mac Allister’s disappointment has been made more noticeable by the decisions to secure the futures of Szoboszlai and Gravenberch. While he said he was pleased that both players had been rewarded with new contracts, he acknowledged that their agreements also reminded him of his own unresolved situation.
“That makes me very happy because they deserve it. At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine,” he said.
Despite his frustration, the World Cup winner sought to reassure Liverpool supporters that his attitude toward the club had not changed. Mac Allister said he would continue giving his maximum effort for Liverpool for as long as he remained at Anfield.
“The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here,” he added.
His comments also underlined the strong personal connection he has developed with Liverpool and the city since arriving from Brighton. Mac Allister made clear that the absence of a new contract has not diminished his affection for the club or its supporters.
“I love this club. I love the fans. I know very well this is an amazing club and this city has something very special,” he said.
The contract issue comes at a time when Liverpool are preparing for another demanding campaign under new manager Andoni Iraola. The Spaniard appeared alongside Mac Allister ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid and indicated that the midfielder remains an important part of his plans.
Iraola played down the immediate significance of the contract situation, stressing that Mac Allister’s desire to remain with Liverpool is the more important issue for now. “The important thing is he wants to be here,” the manager said.
Iraola also suggested there was no need for the club or player to rush discussions about the midfielder’s future, noting that there remains considerable time to address the situation.
“There is still a lot of time to talk about those contract situations,” Iraola said.
For Mac Allister, the immediate priority therefore remains his football. Although the decision not to extend his contract has clearly affected him, his public message has been that Liverpool can continue to expect the same level of commitment from him while he remains under contract.
With two years still left on his existing deal, the midfielder’s future is not an immediate contractual emergency. However, his admission of disappointment and the contrasting decisions involving Szoboszlai and Gravenberch have placed renewed attention on his long-term position at Anfield.
