The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed a viral document purportedly approving a $46 billion grant to a development centre, describing it as fake.
The document, dated August 13, 2026, claimed that CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso had authorised the release of the funds to Atufeg Empowerment and Development Center and Amb. Engr. Atunde Femi Gabriel.
It purportedly stated that the CBN had endorsed the transfer of the money for the execution of “approved national empowerment and developmental projects”.
But the apex bank, in a post on X on Thursday, denied issuing the document and urged Nigerians to disregard it.
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the CBN said, alongside an image of the purported letter marked “Fake Content”.
The bank has previously warned the public about fraudulent schemes and documents falsely attributed to the CBN, urging Nigerians to verify information through its official communication channels.
The warning comes amid a series of cases involving companies distancing themselves from fake notices and social media publications circulated in their names.
May & Baker Nigeria Plc, on August 19, warned against a fraudulent investment scheme being promoted online using its name.
Similarly, Opay on August 31 dismissed as false a notice claiming it would suspend transactions and account-related services from September 1, 2026.
The fintech company also threatened legal action against an X user identified as Hafserh over the publication.
