Harry Kane has emerged as the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or following the release of the shortlist for this year’s award.
The Bayern Munich striker is ranked ahead of Rodri, Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, with the winner scheduled to be announced in October.
Kane’s case is built around a prolific season in which he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern, while also contributing to the team’s build-up and chance creation. His performances for England also strengthened his credentials despite the country falling short of winning the World Cup.
Rodri is ranked second after playing a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph. The midfielder was central to Spain’s dominance, although Manchester City’s failure to win the Premier League during his final season with the club could count against him.
Mbappé occupies third place after scoring 40 goals in 42 La Liga and Champions League appearances for Real Madrid. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot, but Madrid’s lack of major team success could weaken his bid.
Yamal is fourth after another outstanding campaign with Barcelona. The 19-year-old registered 41 goal contributions in 45 appearances, although injuries restricted his impact during Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign.
Lionel Messi completes the top five. The Inter Miami forward remains in contention for a record ninth Ballon d’Or after helping the club win the MLS title. His case could be affected by playing outside Europe and Argentina’s failure to retain the World Cup.
Michael Olise is sixth following a breakthrough season with Bayern Munich. The France international established himself as a major creative threat and finished the World Cup with the most assists, including two in France’s third-place match.
Erling Haaland is seventh after another prolific scoring campaign for Manchester City. He also impressed at the World Cup, scoring seven goals as Norway returned to the tournament.
Jude Bellingham ranks eighth. Although his goal and assist numbers declined during his third season at Real Madrid, the England midfielder continued to deliver in important games and formed an effective partnership with Kane at the World Cup.
Ousmane Dembélé is ninth after scoring 20 goals in 40 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain. His output fell from the previous campaign, but his combination with Mbappé and Olise helped France maintain one of the tournament’s strongest attacks.
Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia completes the top 10. The Georgia international was particularly influential during the Champions League knockout stages, where he produced some of his strongest performances at club level.
