CBN Wins NES Award for Reforms Under Cardoso

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been honoured by the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) for reforms the organisation said have contributed to improvements in Nigeria’s monetary and financial system.

The apex bank received the Distinguished Organisation Award at the 67th Annual Conference of the NES in Abuja, held from September 7 to 10, 2026.

Dr Victor Oboh, Director of the CBN’s Monetary Policy Department, received the award on behalf of Governor Olayemi Cardoso.

The recognition follows major changes introduced by the CBN over the past three years, particularly in foreign exchange management, monetary financing and banking sector regulation.

The NES highlighted the clearance of longstanding foreign exchange obligations and the end of Ways and Means financing to the Federal Government among the measures implemented by the bank.

It also cited the Payment System Vision 2028 and the recapitalisation of Nigerian banks as part of efforts to strengthen the financial sector.

The economic society said the reforms had been accompanied by improvements in several areas, including external reserves and foreign exchange market stability, while inflationary pressures had eased.

It further said the difference between official and parallel foreign exchange rates had fallen to below two per cent, alongside improvements in remittance and capital inflows and investor confidence.

The CBN said the changes reflected its broader effort to rebuild confidence in the Nigerian economy and strengthen the country’s monetary and financial architecture.
