A 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command over the alleged sexual exploitation of her eight-year-old daughter in Onitsha.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that she uploaded a video involving the child on a pornographic platform to make money, with the highest amount she allegedly earned from such content put at $300.
Police said preliminary investigations also indicated that Onyeanusia allegedly subjected her first daughter to similar abuse and uploaded the material online.
The arrest followed the circulation of a video showing the suspect allegedly sexually abusing the eight-year-old girl. The footage prompted police operatives to trace and arrest her through what the command described as open-source intelligence.
According to the police, the child was heard crying and pleading with her mother to stop during the alleged abuse.
During interrogation, Onyeanusia reportedly blamed her actions on the devil and pleaded for forgiveness, while claiming that her husband was unaware of the alleged activities.
Police operatives also rescued four children aged two, three, six and nine during the operation conducted on Thursday evening.
Sex toys and other items considered relevant to the investigation were recovered, according to the command.
Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Onyeanusia remained in custody as investigators worked to establish the full circumstances of the alleged offences and determine whether other people were involved.
He added that the suspect’s husband was also being interrogated to establish whether he had any connection to the alleged abuse.
Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji, described the alleged exploitation of the children as unacceptable and ordered a thorough investigation.
Ikenga said the command’s priority extended beyond prosecution to the safety and wellbeing of the rescued children.
He said police would work with child-protection and other relevant agencies to provide the children with care, protection, counselling and other support, while safeguarding their identities and privacy.
