Man drowns in Lagos river after alleged cultists’ attack

A man identified as Opeyemi has drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, following conflicting accounts over how he ended up in the water.

A police source told PUNCH Metro that the incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, after Opeyemi was allegedly chased by suspected cultists.

According to the source, Opeyemi was on his way to buy an item when the men reportedly pursued him, caught up with him and attacked him before he jumped into the river in an attempt to escape.

A resident alleged that people who attempted to rescue him were prevented from doing so by those chasing him.

However, Naija Confra, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, reported conflicting claims from residents about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

While some residents allegedly claimed Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and entered the river himself, others who said they witnessed the incident reportedly maintained that he was chased and attacked before jumping into the water.

The circumstances of the drowning had not been independently established as of the time of filing the report.

Opeyemi was described by residents as a hardworking and well-liked man.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was contacted for clarification but said she would revert.
